RESIGNATION
Sir,
I received commission in the Pakistan army in 1961 and was employed
there till I left the same on 25th July, 1971 and came to India
after crossing the border. After crossing the border I took part in the
liberation struggle and started work after getting responsibility of
sector no. 11 as a sector commander. I was wounded on 14th Nov,
1971 in a frontal battle and was taken in a hospital of India where I had
to stay until April, 1972. After coming back to Bangladesh, I was
appointed as the adjutant general in the GHQ of Bangladesh army. After two
months, I was transferred from the general headquarter and was appointed
as the commander of 44th brigade. Now the army chief of the
staff is telling me to take up the responsibility as the D.D.P.
I have no further intention to be in the service of Bangladesh army
and desire to be relieved for the following reasons:
(A) When I joined the liberation struggle in the first part of Aug,
1971, I saw that the freedom fighters are advancing the liberation
struggle in the midst of various difficulties. But the representatives of
the people like M.N.A.s and M.P.s were staying at a safe distance from the
liberation struggle and did not in any way help to expand the battle. They
were even discussing that they only wanted provincial autonomy and not
freedom. Many such representatives became hated persons amongst the
freedom fighters and I always advised the freedom fighters not to be harsh
to the M.N.A.s and M.P.s for these types of representatives would get no
opportunity to lead the people after attainment of freedom.
It is probably for this reason that the provisional government
formed in Mujibnagar entered into a humiliating, secret treaty with India
and got Indiafs armed assistance for freedom to catapult them to power
in future. When everything was ready by the freedom fighters only then did
the Indian army entered Bangladesh and plundered her wealth. In this very
way the provisional government betrayed the freedom fighters and the
people. In this connection I am referring the article of Col. Ziauddin
gHidden Priceh published in the paper Holiday. I am even ready to
accept the proposition that our prime –minister Bangabandhu shall
amend the treaty and advance the revolution for the progress and
development of the country.
I envisaged that we would build a glorious army for Bangladesh. I
served in an army which stays in barrack and understand how dangerous can
such a barrack army be for a less developed nation. As the Pakistan army
had no relation with the masses, it could enforce a rule of terror in
Bangladesh with its autocratic type of governance which finally destroyed
the country. I started my work with the idea of building a productive,
pro-people army which would act as an instrument of effective development
of the country. But unfortunately, the chief of the army staff and also
some high ranking officers did never render any assistance or
encouragement for my idea. I could never reach in unity of opinion with
the chief of the army staff in this fundamental issue.
(B) The prime minister wanted sincerely that I should go abroad for
my treatment. When I was preparing to go abroad, I came to know that some
officers of the army along with a member of the cabinet was trying to
stage a coup de tát taking the opportunity of the absence of
prime-minister from the country. (The chief of the army staff has
appraised the prime minister already about the conspiracy).I then thought
I should postpone my tour till the return of the prime minister. Far from
taking any action against the conspirators, the chief of the army staff
has told me to relinquish the command of 44th brigade and take
the responsibility of D.D.P. instead. I feel that the conspiracy is still
going on and many others are associated with that. This type of usurpation
of power goes, in general, against the hopes and aspirations of the people
and it must be stopped. If no action is taken against the persons
associated with the conspiracy, then the goodwill of the army will be
sullied and in that case it is not possible on my part to work in the
army. I took part in the liberation struggle not as an officer of the
Pakistan army but as a freedom fighter. I think that is very prestigious
for me. The interest of the people is supreme to me. I want to go back to
the people after leaving the army. I shall tell the people, who were with
me during liberation struggle, what ominous things are approaching them.
I shall be obliged if my resignation letter is accepted.
Yours most obediently
. Lt. Col. M. A .Taher
Commander, 44th Brigade
